Be Salty

Sea salt on a wooden spoon

Let’s talk salt. We know it is normally used to season food, as well as on roads in the winter time to melt those slick spots, but did you know it is also considered a great cleaning agent?

Salt is essentially tiny crystals that help purify and preserve. When you think of the many ways it has been used in the past, it is truly a remarkable agent. Even the Egyptians recognized salt’s preservation properties, and used it in their important mummification processes. While we look at sodium as a food enhancer, it can be so much more.

The purifying nature of salt makes it a great element to clean with. Try using salt to scrub your sink. Put some on a wet sponge or rag and scrub in circular motions, the same way you would if you used any powdered cleaner. I like to imagine any negativity leaving with the salt as I rinse it off the sink and watch it retreat down the drain. It is a great cleaner for iron skillets, and does not damage the seasoning on the pan itself. I also recommend sprinkling on your carpets and letting it sit for about 15 minutes before vacuuming up. Salt is effective in killing dust mites, and other creepy crawlies that may be lurking in carpet. Salt freshens the air at the same time, so go ahead and be liberal with your salt as a carpet cleaner! The same can be done on mattresses…sprinkle salt, let sit, then vacuum or brush away.

While most think of salt as simple table salt, or maybe sea salt, look in your store for pink (Himalayan) salt. I have spotted it in multiple places lately, like Dollar Tree, Walmart, and our local grocer. I absolutely love Himalayan salt. I use the pink crystals in all my recipes, and taste a difference from normal table salt due to the extra minerals. The pink color is from 84 distinct minerals, and we can benefit from all of them! You may be more familiar with Himalayan salt when you think of salt lamps. They put off a satisfying warm glow and are often found as a lamp or candle holder. They are said to help balance energies in a home. I have Himalayan salt lamps placed around main living areas to reap their benefits.

There are many ways to use salt throughout the home, whether it be for cooking, cleaning, or purifying, so go ahead, be salty!!

Is pink 'Himalyan' salt better for us than regular table salt?

The SAT: Early Preparation is Vital

My goal this year it to establish habits that benefit my health and overall well being.  This month I am focusing on getting up early.  Now, if any of you really knew me, you would know what a challenge this is.  I am not a morning person.  Never have been.  As a kid I was the one hiding under my covers with a flashlight reading books until it was almost 2 in the morning.  How I managed to make it through the day back then, I have no clue.  I will still find myself staying up later than I planned and it seems to derail my whole week.  So! I am trying to break the cycle this month and establish a habit of going to bed at 10:30 p.m. I woke up at 5 a.m. this morning and already feel more on top of the day.  I was able to get a full workout in and breakfast before 7 a.m.  I now feel like I have time to work on my blog.  Hopefully I can keep this habit up!  After researching, I  have found many successful people share the habit of early rising.  In fact, Ben Franklin was known for it, and even wrote what may be the first planner.  It started at 5 a.m.  I have included a picture of his “planner” from his 1791 autobiography below:

Ben Franklin

Seriously, the man would have been blogging all his wisdom if he were alive today.  If you are not an early riser, and would like to be one…take on the challenge with me this month! Be like Ben and set your clock for 5 a.m.  Set out your clothes and things you need so it isn’t so hard to jump right into action. Tell me all about what you are getting done with your “extra” morning hours.  Most importantly don’t forget to set your coffee on a timer to brew so it is ready for you as you rise.  One of the best smells in the morning is coffee.  I honestly couldn’t function without the stuff!

Happy rising!

Finding Moments for Me

Sometimes as a stay at home mom, I have a hard time finding moments for myself.  Between taking care of a little, taking care of hubby, and keeping a clean house, I find little time to let my mind just… relax.  I have discovered, however, meditative moments in mundane chores.  By turning off background chaos like the TV and radio, and opening windows to let the sunshine and breeze in, I set the scene for great inner moments.  Most chores can be mind numbing, but these are the very ones that work great for finding zen.  Anything from washing dishes to ironing clothes can be turned into a “moment” for you.  Simply focus on deep breaths as you do the job…forget how repetitive it is, and use that to your advantage to let your mind go into a state of relaxation as you work.

Now, some people cannot quiet their mind enough to get to the zen state I’m talking of.  For those of you who have trouble, I recommend finding a guided meditation podcast or a you-tube meditation you can play while you work.  They actually have meditations for washing  dishes! Just google “dish washing meditation” and several pop up.  I listen to it on my phone with a wireless headset.  I highly recommend investing in a wireless headset, by the way, it makes moving around so much easier while listening.

Another great way to find zen in your day is to hang your laundry outside.  Even if all you can do is hang laundry on a balcony…get yourself a small laundry line that is retractable, or a wooden fold-able clothes dryer and try it!  There is something very therapeutic when you get outside and hang the laundry.  Make sure to feel the sun on your skin, and notice the breeze through your hair.  Sometimes I like watching the motion of the clothes swaying on the line.  Trust me, it can be very enjoyable!  Take time to notice the noises…even city noises can be relaxing if you let your mind focus on them. The combination of the clean laundry smells, outside sounds and breezy sunshine days will immediately brighten your mood!

Give it a try, and let me know how it goes!  What mundane chore can you turn into a zen moment?

Keep It or Kick It: 10 Hour Coffee Diet

After trying this diet for 7 days, I have reached the point where I can decide to keep the diet, or kick it to the curb.  I was excited about the 10 Hour Coffee Diet ( by J. Jolan, R. Bryda)!  The coffee recipes were good.  Seemed fool proof and easy!  Unfortunately I was so fog brained most of the time and I think I was having a problem with sleeping due to the coffee at lunch.  I just couldn’t make it work for me.  I am too sensitive to the caffeine. By the time dinner rolled around, I was so freaking hungry, I probably ate more than I should have.  I’m sure this diet would work for others, but, I’m afraid I have to kick this one to the curb.  It is not personally sustainable…for me.  I don’t think it is meant to be.  I lost one pound while on this diet.  That is not enough weight to justify sticking with it and putting up with the caffeine side effects.  I hate having fog brain!  Anyway!  On to the next diet!

If you think this diet is for you, and want to give it a whirl, here is the book:  http://www.amazon.com/The-10-Hour-Coffee-Diet-Transform/dp/1494486296

VERDICT: KICK IT!

Caffeine Induced Orgnizing

vintage-ad-1950s-uk-stor-mor

So, I have made it three days on the “10 Hour Coffee Diet”.  Yesterday I felt really good!  After downing my protein coffee drink, I ended up starting an en-devour of organizing my entire house.  I turned on some peppy music to match my caffeine buzz and started in the kitchen.  First priority was the dreaded pantry.  This was something I had been putting off for awhile now.  In the name of eating healthy, it had to be done!  And guess what?  There is an app for that!  There are a few to choose from…I picked one that scans the bar code of each item I have called.  It is called Pantry Check.  It automatically brings up a picture of the foodstuff and sorts it into categories!  Plus it tracks expiration dates and alerts me when something is about to go past due.  How cool is that?  I love technology when it actually works!   The only problem is you have to scan every, single, little thing.

Now, I have a walk-in pantry. It isn’t Martha Stewart huge, but it is just big enough to step into.  So what does one do with a walk-in pantry?  Fill it, of course! Being in the middle of nowhere, I like to be prepared for those “just in case” zombie apocalypse scenarios.  So I stock up on beans, rice, canned fruits and vegetables.  Don’t forget the canned meats like tuna, chicken, anchovies, and snails…yes snails (don’t knock em till you try the tasty little buggers).  Then there is the baking section of white flour, wheat flour, coconut flour, hazelnut flour, almond flour (you know, for all those crazy Pinterest recipes)…you get the idea.  What I thought would be quick, with my new found technology, took me most the day.  After all that, I’m proud to say, my pantry resembles the 50’s fridge in the pic above!  I can now quickly do a search on my app to see what I have on hand when meal planning.  This has one minor downfall.  If the hubby finishes a product, and doesn’t tell me, I will have no clue I need to update the app.  This is probably doomed for failure…but, I’m pretty happy with the novelty of it!

New Years & Resolutions

It’s that time of year again.  That time where we can press the “reset” button on life.  The New Year brings fresh hope for finishing things unaccomplished.  I plan on making this the year I drop the pounds, organize my home, and keep up with a routine that includes blogging on a regular basis.  Not too much to ask, right?

I will start with diet and exercise.  I have been so inconsistent with working out and eating right.  I get bored easy, what can I say!  Not to mention, most diets I have tried are unsustainable.  Everyone is different…I believe different diets work for different people.  It has got to be a gene thing.  Anyway, after watching the new reality show on ABC called “My Diet is Better Than Yours”, I decided I could attempt this at home.  I can find the diet that works for me…by trying them…for a week.  My plan is to “try-on” a diet for 7 days.  At the end of 7 days I will weigh-in and see if the diet is working.  Now I know the scale is not the most accurate in the beginning of a new diet.  Water weight fluctuations and muscle can really throw off the numbers.  So I also plan on using body measurements and consider my overall physical and mental well being while on each.  At that point, I will make a decision to keep it or kick it.  I have started today with the “10-Hour Coffee Diet” (J. Jolan).  So it basically consists of, you guessed it…coffee!  The coffee drink I have to make has ample amounts of fat and protein.   But, this is supposed to sustain me until dinner.  Um, yeah.  I love coffee, but I’m having a hard time waiting till dinner to eat a real meal!  This feels like slim-fast on steroids.  I will give it 7 days before I decide, and update you all on how it is going. So! Day 1 is officially over, but, I have to say, it was pretty rough.  I had “fog brain” all day until dinner.  I have heard others rave about putting fats in coffee…not feeling it yet, and I love the stuff!  We shall see…
